Tips for outdoor adventures in and around Lillehammer

Experience the nature surrounding Lillehammer – whether on foot, skis, or from a mountaintop

The Lillehammer region offers outdoor adventures for everyone – from peaceful lakeside trails to breathtaking mountain hikes and miles of cross-country ski tracks. Here you'll find our best seasonal tips – whether you're traveling with family, searching for peace and quiet in nature, or on a quest for the perfect panoramic view

Balbergkampen

Balbergkampen

Balbergkampen (670 m.a.s.l.) is located just north of Lillehammer town centre.

This is a popular and scenic hike, and at the top you'll be rewarded with stunning views over the town and the surrounding nature.

It’s a great choice if you're looking for a short mountain hike with a moderately challenging route of 3–4 km. Several ascent options are available.

The hike takes approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes to complete on average and can be enjoyed year-round.

Flokofallet

Flokofallet

Lillehammer´s highest waterfall, with a drop of over 30 metres. Flokofallet is located at the end of a narrow valley and offers a truly unique nature experience.

Often called “the mysterious Flokofallet”, the waterfall is hidden from view until you're very close – you hear its thunder long before you see it.

At the bottom of the valley, lush plants like Hunderstry and towering ferns grow, creating a rare and protected environment. The area is a nature reserve, and it is not permitted to collect plants or anything else from the valley floor around the Flokoa stream.

Mesnaelva

Vandring opp Mesnaelva

A scenic and popular hike along the Mesna River. This trail follows the Mesna River, where you’ll discover tranquil pools, small waterfalls, and old dams. The atmosphere is almost magical as you walk uphill, surrounded by forest and the sound of rushing water. If you enjoy swimming in beautiful surroundings, there are several calm pools where you can take a refreshing dip.

Along the river you'll also find the Mesna Cultural Trail, marked with signs that tell the rich history of the area.

We recommend starting your walk at Badedammen, near Stampesletta. From here, a forest trail leads you uphill alongside the river's rapids and waterfalls. You’ll cross the charming Collett’s Bridge, named after the painter Fredrik Collett. From the bridge, you’ll see the distinctive houses of Svarga, the former home of Norway’s famous mystic and clairvoyant, Marcello Haugen. If you continue all the way up, you can follow the trail further to the canal.

Langrenn

Reinsvatnet rundt - klassisk skitur i høyfjellslandskap

Reinsvatnet Rundt – a scenic and family-friendly ski loop near Nordseter. Reinsvatnet Rundt is a beautiful, family-friendly cross-country ski tour in picturesque surroundings close to Nordseter. The trail runs through gently rolling terrain, ideal for both children and adults looking for a peaceful day in the mountains.

As you glide across the open highlands, you'll enjoy wide views of nearby peaks and the mirror-like Reinsvatnet lake winding through the landscape.

On sunny winter days, you can enjoy your packed lunch sheltered by a snowdrift or take a break at one of the waymarked trail junctions. The tour is perfect both as a relaxing Sunday outing and as a calm workout in fresh mountain air.

The trail starts and ends at the Nordseter parking area, and is part of the well-maintained trail network in the region, with connections toward Nevelfjell and Sjusjøen for those wanting a longer adventure.
